Scented Teas

SCENTED TEAS

Green teas lend themselves well to scenting, and are used for the most famous scented brands. A few black teas are also scented. When flower scent is used with black tea, the blossoms are usually pounded to a powder, which is mixed with the tea leaves. Scented teas often have the word hua (flower) in the name.

Three of the main ways of naming scented teas are:

  1. By flowers used in scenting: The designation huacha (flower tea) is added to the names of teas, for instance Chulan Huacha (Zhulan or Chloranthus spicatus). It is also added to Daidai (Citrus aurantium, Canton orange), Guihua (Osmanthus fragrans, similar to cinnamon), Moli (Jasmine), Youzi (Pomelo Blossom), Yulan (magnolia), Zhizi (Cape Jasmine). There is also Meigui Hongcha (Rose Congou or Rose-scented Black).
  2. By names of crude tea used in scenting: The word hua is prefixed to various kinds of tea. Examples: Huapilochun, Huadafang, Huahongqing, Hualongjing, Huamaofeng, and Hua Oolong.
  3. By the name of fruit used in scenting, of which Lichee Black (Lizhi Hongcha) is the best known.

Below are more detailed descriptions of a few scented teas.
