His cantata No.211 of 1732, in praise
of coffee, possibly premiered at Zimmermann's Leipzig coffee house,
was one of the more notable musical efforts inspired by the muse of
caffeine. His life was a personal refutation of the early notion
that coffee caused impotence, as he fathered 21 children in his
spare time (which must have been brief, considering his musical
output). (d. 1710) Syrian by birth. Maronite scholar, professor of theology at the Sorbonne, related the story of a goatherd's discovery of coffee, 1671, although his goatherd was not named Khaldi. Humanist, first man to send coffee beans to Europe, 1596 (see LeCluse). French composer of "Le Caffe" in 1715, musical work in praise of coffee, which refers to "those who disown Bacchus' reign" in reference to the growing popularity of coffee over wine. One of many such pieces from the eighteenth century. An undesirable flavor, detected at the back of the mouth, often as an aftertaste. Sometimes the result of over-roasting, improper brewing (over-extraction), staling from oxidation, or resulting from poor storage. "Slightly bitter" can be desirable, as per espresso, dark chocolate, chicory. Coffee bean size between medium and large. A person who makes coffee drinks as a profession. The pale flavor often found in low grown Robusta coffees. Also caused by under-extraction (too little coffee or too course a grind). A mixture of two or more individual varietals of coffee. The tactile impression of the weight of the coffee in the mouth. May range from thin to medium to full to buttery to syrupy. The salty sensation caused by excessive heat after brewing (truck-stop coffee). |
