Kaffa

Khaldi

Kolschitzky, Georg

A coffee-growing region of south-west Ethiopia, which could well have given its name to coffee. (The alternative idea is that the name was adapted from the Arabic word for wine.) Coffee still grows wild there. Kaffa produces some superb coffees.

Name attributed by some to the goatherd who supposedly discovered coffee from his goat's frisky behavior (see Banesius, whose goatherd was not named Khaldi).

Polish hero of Siege of Vienna, 1683, who passed through Turkish lines with message to Duke Charles of Lorraine and was rewarded with sacks of coffee left by retreating Turks. He opened Vienna's Blue Bottle coffee-house.
