Nicaragua has the distinction of
producing the largest coffee beans in the word. Its Maragogype beans
are simply enormous, especially when they are a third larger after
roasting. Unfortunately, biggest is not always best, and Nicaragua's
coffees in general are fairly nondescript, and are mostly hidden
away in blends. The main coffees (besides the freakish Maragogypes)
are Jinotega (grown up to 1,650 meters) and Matagalpa (up to 1,000
meters) both named after the regions of highest altitude. The
classifications are the normal sort of Central American titles: "Low
Grown", "Medium Grown", "High Grown" and "Strictly High Grown". The
general cup characteristics include light body, pleasant flavor and
low-to-medium acidity. |
