One of the last countries to take up
coffee-growing. Papua New Guinea has achieved remarkable success in
only about 40 years of commercial growth, attaining 1.07 per cent of
total world production. Its coffees, almost all arabicas, were
cultivated from good varieties, the original coming from the Blue
Mountains of Jamaica; they give well-rounded, acidic and fragrant
cups. The Robusta is all grown and exported to meet the demands of
the Australian market. Whether the devastation of the tidal wave of
1998 will cause long-term damage to any coffee-growing areas remains
to be seen. |
