Tanzania grows 0.77 of one per cent of
the world crop, although Robusta accounts for one third to a quarter
of all Tanzanian coffee. Overall, the Arabica can be similar to the
Kenyan AB, but may be more inconsistent and can range from
thin-in-the-cup to full-boiled, especially if it is the Bourbon
variety, which also has good acidity and aroma. The Kent variety,
while a bit harder, is not quite so pleasantly acidic, and can taste
a bit flat. The Arabica grows in altitudes as high as 1,900 meters, and the trees are generally shaded, mulched and irrigated. The unwashed Arabica and the Robusta are grown and processed in the Bukoba region. The much superior washed Arabica, graded with the same lettering system as that of Kenya, comes from the slopes around the mountains of Kilimanjaro. Meru and Oldeani, and from the southern plateau regions of Pare. |
