After so many sad stories of countries
where coffee cultivation has practically ceased to exist, Zambia is
a ray of sunshine. Coffee only came to Zambia a few decades ago, and
already it is a producing member of the International Coffee
Organization. During the crop year 1996-97 Zambia could claim only
0.03 of one per cent of the world production, but this represented
33,000 bags of coffee, all of it Arabica grown in the Muchinga
mountains of the north. Whether it will ever produce enough for a
thriving export trade remains to be seen. |
