Tinned Coffee

Tinned Coffee

Coffee has become such an important part of life in Japan that for about 20 years now Japanese coffee companies have been selling small tins of coffee from vending machines in public places. They offer various blends of liquid coffees, some containing milk, some black, and some with more sugar, some with less. The machines will dispense the tins either cold or at air temperature.

Amazingly, liquid Japanese coffee can also be obtained in a tin which will actually heat the coffee. A couple of minutes before the coffee is to be drunk, the would-be drinker simply breaks a tab or strip, usually on the bottom of the tin, and in a sealed-off space below the coffee, certain chemicals are allowed to combine and produce exactly the right amount of heat for a hot cup of coffee. Indeed, the Japanese even have special coffee saunas, where they bathe in coffee grounds.
